Central Mississippi Health Services, Inc.
Central Mississippi Health Services, Inc., (formerly Mississippi Family Health Center (MFHC) has a distinguished history of more than 50 years of providing preventive primary and tertiary level, culturally sensitive healthcare in the city of Jackson and Hinds County, Mississippi. Jackson, the capital city, has a population of more than 160,000 people in a metropolitan area of approximately 595,000 people that includes Rankin and Madison counties. Hinds County, with a population that is 73% Black now comprises around 39% of the metropolitan area population. 20% of Hinds County residents are living in poverty.
Dr. Smith opened the Mississippi Family Health Center (MFHC) in 1963 on Lynch Street in Jackson near Jackson State College, moving to the present Winter Street location in 1969. In 1995, Dr. Smith's practice, MFHC, donated its assets of $2 million to a new entity, Central Mississippi Health Services, Inc. (CMHS), a Board of Directors was formed of local leaders and users of the clinic and Dr. Robert Smith became the Chief Executive Officer. In 1995 CMHS became the first Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) look-a-like in Mississippi and in 2003 the organization was funded by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) and became a full-fledged FQHC. Today CMHS has three locations in the city of Jackson and a fourth on the campus of Tougaloo College, the first such clinic located on a college campus and serves more than 6,000 individuals from the Jackson metropolitan area and beyond.
